Pumping machines and apparatus. - An electrically-driven submersible pump suitable for dealing with flooded compartments in a ship comprises a direct-current motor of vertical pattern enclosed in a casing adapted to be supplied with air under pressure and having within the casing associated therewith an air-cooler comprising pipes through which water is circulated when the pump is in operation. The pump a of the centrifugal type is coupled to a motor g controlled by a flood-switch in the compartment and by a controller at an elevated position. A motor-driven blower is also arranged in an elevated position and delivers air to the motor casing h through an inlet o and also if desired to the casing of the controller. The blower is arranged to be started at the same time as the pump. The casing h is divided by a flange joint i and the upper part is provided with inspection-windows j. The lower part is provided with cooling-pipes k surrounding the motor and connected to delivery and discharge pipes l, connected in turn by pipes l<2> to the delivery and suction of the pump a. The heated air from the motor is circulated by a fan m.
