Abstract

Butt joints.-The sections of a steam or other vapour generator, superheater, cooler, condenser, or the like are held in position and kept pressure tight by hydraulic or other fluid presses. The sections a, Fig. 1, of a steam generator are held in tight connection by hydraulic presses w having plungers t, Fig. 4, acted upon by the discharge from the feed pump. The cylinders of the presses have jackets in which the feed-water is heated. The sections may consist of flattened corrugated or indented tubes, or of plates, or they may be cast. A metal having a high tensile strength such as nickel chromium alloy is used in the construction of the sections. End pieces h' and distance pieces h are welded to the ends of the sections.
