Abstract

207,681. Parkes, S. R. Oct. 28, 1922. Latches, lift; reversible latches; striking- plates for locks and latches.-A follower-operated lift-latch carries a tumbler-controlled sliding plate which can be moved under a fixed abutment on the casing to secure the latch against operation bv the follower. The latch is formed from a sheet metal shank 3 and a head 7, and is pivoted at 4 to the casing. A follower 17 made from two pieces of sheet metal and mounted to turn in the bearings 19 formed in the casing acts on a flange 16 on the near end of the latch shank. A plunger 13 with a head 12 recessed to engage the flat latch-shank coacts with a spring 14 to hold the latch in its operative position in the striking-plate. A sheet metal plate 23 having lugs 24 engaging the top and bottom edges of the shank 3 and a slot 25 engaging the pivot 4 can slide on the latch when operated by a key 26 to engage under the fixed stud 28, thereby securing the latch bolt against operation. Tumblers 31 pivoted in a pin 30 in the plate 23 engage the pin 4 and prevent operation of the plate except by the proper key. The head 7 is bevelled on both sides, as shown in Fig. 5, and a flange 6 on the shank 3 closes the hole 5 made in the casing- edge for allowing upward motion of the latch. The casing is made in two symmetrical halves 1, 2 and the latch bolt is pivoted centrally to allow the device to be reversed bodily for use on right and left hand hand doors. The striking plate has a pair of inclined faces 42 leading into the recess 41 for the latch head 7 for reversibility. A small flange 10 is bent up at the end of the shank 3 to raise the shank out of contact with the face of the casing to reduce friction.
