Stability, determining.- In apparatus for determining the centre of gravity of a ship from a consideration of the head given by a displacing force, an inclinometer 1 arranged athwartship is pivoted at 2 and carries a pivoted spirit level 17 the position of which can be adjusted by means of the screw stud 19. The free end 9 of the inclinometer works across a scale 15 appropriate to the displacement of the ship. In operation, the ship is heeled by means of a weight and the spirit level and the reading of the pointer 9 are both zeroized. The weight is then moved athwart ship to heel the ship in the opposite direction and the position of the inclinometer is adjusted by means of the micrometer screw 14 until the spirit level again occupies a central position. The reading of the pointer on the scale 15 then gives the height of the centre of gravity of the ship. In modifications, the spirit level is replaced by a plumb bob and a series of scales such as 15 appropriate to various displacements of the ship are arranged on the periphery of a drum, the appropriate scale being turned into alignment with the pointer 9.
