Abstract
11,283. Ralston, S. B. May 14. Metacentric calculators. - Comprises an apparatus by means of which the righting-arms for a number of conditions of loading may be readily determined. Adopting the usual notation, a plan of B.R. curves for several displacements is attached to a board a pivoted on a pin b. On one side of the board is fitted a pin d which can be adjusted in accordance with the condition of loading. The pin b corresponds to the centre of gravity of the ship, and a scale p shows for various displacements the B.M., while the scale o represents the G.M. The position of the pin d, to which the scale o is attached, is adjusted by a screw f and is shown at a point corresponding to G.M.=4 ft. and a displacement of 5000 tons. A bar i moving parallel to itself along racks m engages the upper end of the pin d and carries a scale q. To determine the B.R. for any angle of heel, the bar i is moved along the racks until the desired angle is moved through by the board a, and the distance is read off the curve corresponding to the displacement of the ship.
