Telemeters; course indicators.-The instrument is for determining the distance of a ship at sea from a point on land, and the distance at which the ship will pass the point when directly abeam. It consists of a graduated quadrant G, two radius bars A, B with clamping-screws E, E, and a bar H which can be moved, parallel to itself and to the zero line of the quadrant, by a rack I and pinion L. A rule D can be slid along the bar H by the rack and pinion O, P. In use, the bar A is directed to the point on land, and, after running a distance shown by the log, the bar B is directed on the same point; the setting of the bars may be effected by sights or by the compass. The rule D and bar H are then moved, by their racks and pinions, until the distance read on the log is indicated between A and B on the former, when the distances of the point on land in the two positions of the ship may be read off on the arms A and B respectively. By turning the arm B into the position B', the distance the ship will pass off the point when abeam is read. A modified form, in which the quadrant is replaced by a semicircle, and details are otherwise modified, is also described.
