18,341. Hudson, J. F. Aug. 7. Departure rules.-Relates to instruments comprising a scale G<2>, a protractor A having its centre on the zero line of the scale, and two clampable graduated arms D, E pivoted respectively on the centre of the protractor and on a carriage G which travels in a slot H and has a pointer G<1> reading on the scale G<2>, and consists in se uring a segmental member 0 to the centre of the arm D beneath the protractor, and in providing a screw J clear of the protractor which may press on the member 0 and clamp it against a small plate N beneath it. The arm D is made without upward projections, and the arm E is in a plane immediately above it. The carriage G may move stiffly in the slot or be clamped by a butterfly-headed screw G<3>. The protractor may be replaced by a compass. The instrument may be used on a moving ship for determining the distance of a distant object, the slot H being placed, if desired, in the fore-and-aft line of the ship, and for solving other trigonometrical problems.
