Stability and trim, determining and indicating.-A frame ADE carries a pendulum suspended at A and has its lower bar GF pivoted at F<1> and provided with a vernier scale at G<1>. In order to determine the vertical position of the pendulum the bar GF is provided with a graduated scale and spirit level I, while the pendulum B car. ries a registering mark. The frame ADE is arranged to move freely between two side frames of which one, JKLM is shown, while an extension Q of these frames carries a scale S which is graduated to read feet of alteration in trim. The apparatus is adjusted so that when the ship is on an even keel, the reading on the scale S is zero. The bar GF is moved by means of the screw and nut T, U, and the whole frame ADE turns about the pivot F<1> until the pendulum is central. The reading on the scale S then gives the trim. The side frames JKLM are provided with knife-edge bearings J<1>, M<1>, resting on brackets V, W, carried by a beam X which is pivoted at Y. The beam X may te clamped in any position by a nut Z. The two side frames shown as O, P, Fig. 2, carry a graduated quadrant q<1>, and a pointer p<1> is fixed to a bracket on the beam X so that the list of the vessel is shown in degrees. The apparatus may be used in connexion with a sounding-pipe placed midway between the bow and stern, so that the draught at the bow and stern may be obtained from the draught amidships by adding or subtracting an amount determined from the trim as indicated on the scale S. The apparatus may be used in connexion with ships, floating cranes, floating docks, or the like.
