Vibration-dampers.-In a frictional shock-absorber for vehicles of the type in which movement in one direction is retarded while movement in the other direction is substantially free, a pair of friction members are pressed together by a nut controlled by a member connected to one of the relatively moving parts of the vehicle between which the shock absorber acts, resilient means being provided for turning the said nut for the purpose of allowing a short, substantially free initial movement of the bodv in the direction in which movement is to be retarded after which the device applies the maximum resistance and maintains this resistance substantially uniform thereafter. The apparatus as shown comprises a plate 1 attached in spaced relation to the chassis 2, a fixed spindle 3 having a steeply-pitched screw thread 21, two friction washers 18, 19, a movable plate 14 with an arm 15 adapted for attachment to the axle, a nut 20 with flange 21<a>, a spring 22, and a cap 26. The spring 22 is coiled and attached at one end to the flange 21<a> at 24 and at the other end in a slot 25 in the spindle 3. On movement of the arm 15 in the free direction, the slight friction caused by the pressure of the spring 22 causes the nut 20 to be unscrewed and allow unretarded movement of the plate 14. On the return stroke, a small initial free movement is permitted owing to the play of the nut, after which the flange 21<a> of the nut compresses the friction washers and causes the maximum retardation during the remainder of the stroke. The pitch of the screw is designed to give the desired pressure and consequent frictional resistance.
