Abstract

262,197. Bailey, R. W. H. Sept. 16, 1925. Vibration-dampers for the steering-mechanism of motor vehicles and for other purposes include an oscillatary member carrying a heavy mass frictionally connected therewith the member being geared to a movable part of the steering or other mechanism. In the application to steering mechanism shown in Fig. 1, the casing a<1> is mounted on the frame and the arm b<8> is connected to some part of the steering transmission. The usual steering movement oscillates the spindle b, to which the arm b<8> is fixed, and these oscillations are transmitted through an epicyclic or similar multiplying gear b<3>, d<3>, c<3> to an annular mass of lead f or other heavy substance frictionally held between plates c<2>, e<1> pressed together by springs e<2>. During the usual steering movements, the mass f and the plates c<2>, e<1> move together, but slipping takes place between the two when too rapid movements or oscillations of the steering gear tend to occur. Two annular lead masses with a corrugated steel spring between them may be employed. An internal sector and pinion may replace the epicyclic gear.
