Abstract

155,904. Nye, G. E. Sept. 24, 1919. Helical springs.-A shock-absorber for vehicles &c. comprises a helical load spring or systsem of load springs and a helical recoil spring, means being introduced between the load and recoil springs to prevent them from losing their united compression. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the load and recoil springs c, d, which are carried on a rod b mounted on one part of the vehicle &c., are separated by an abutment a fixed or formed on the rod b, and the sleeve h, mounted on another part of the vehicle for example by trunnions i, carries an abutment f bearing between the springs. Adjustable collars g are provided on the rod b to ensure the necessary compression of the springs, and washers j may be arranged between the springs and the abutments a, f. The springs may be arranged in a tube instead of on the rod b, and the washers may be dished to hold rubber pads or springs bearing against the abutment a. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the recoil spring d is mounted in a flanged sleeve m inside a tube which carries load springs c, d* and is formed with the abutment a. The flange o on the sleeve m bears against the abutment f.
