Abstract
447,075. Vehicle-suspension systems ; hydraulic shock-absorbers. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd., Luton, Bedfordshire. Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34180. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1933. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A vehicle - suspension device comprises a wheel-carrying arm fixed to a shaft 6 rotatably mounted on a fixed casing 2 within which a lever 4 fixed to the shaft co-operates with a coiled spring 1 which is disposed between spherical bearing surfaces in order that the direction of the force exerted by the lever may act always along the axis of the spring and which has connected to its ends the respective elements of a hydraulic shock-absorber of the piston-and-cylinder type. As shown the spring is disposed between washers 9, 11, the washer 9 having a spherical seat for engaging a spherical segment 8 abutting the casing cover 7 and the washer 11 having a spherical depression 15 for engaging the spherical end 16 of the lever 4. The shock-absorber cylinder 13 is welded to a sleeve 12 on the washer 9 and the piston-rod 14 is connected to the washer 11. Damping is effected by throttling channels 17, 18 in the piston 19 and cylinder-cap 20 respectively, the liquid passing between the casing 2 and cylinder through openings 21 in the washer 9.
