Abstract

1413558 Lost motion couplings GIRLING Ltd 8 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 19655/73 Heading F2U A lost motion device mechanically linked to a levelling system of a vehicle having a sprung part and an unsprung part comprises a prestressed coil torsion spring 14 whose ends extend laterally from the coil to engage projecting pins 8, 12 fast with an input member 1 and an output member 4 respectively, the input member being movable in response to relative movement of the vehicle parts, and the torque applied to the spring in either direction from non-transient movement of the input member relative to a valve actuating member 3 of the levelling system being transmitted through the spring and output member to the actuating member. As shown, the input member 1 on an unsprung part is secured to a bearing 2 and carries a pin 8 while the output member 4 on the sprung part carries a pin 12 and is secured to the valve actuating member 3 by a pin 6. The levelling valve may have a damping device in which an orifice restricts flow of fluid in the vehicle suspension system. In operation, when the vehicle loading is increased non-transiently (e.g. due to baggage), the input member 1 rotates relative to the actuating member 3 and the movement is transmitted through the spring after the preloading of the spring is overcome to rotate the output member 4 and valve actuating member 3 smoothly. When a sudden transient movement of one of the vehicle parts occurs (e.g. due to the vehicle riding over a bump) a sudden increase in torque is applied to the spring and the damping device in the levelling valve tends to absorb the energy and thereby prevent sudden movement of the output member 4 and consequent operation of the levelling valve.
