Abstract

205,428. Dodd, F. W. March 8, 1923. Strands of special section, wire ropes with.- One or more layers of a rope are formed of wire strands A, A<1>, Fig. 2, having inner and outer rib members joined by a, web, the wires having a permanent set which lengthens the outer rib relatively to the inner one. The ribs are constituted by two circular portions a, a', the circles being of different diameters and being either contiguous or spaced a slight distance apart. The web a<2> connecting the ribs has its surface formed of circular arcs of radii corresponding to the circles forming the ribs, so that on one side the outer rib of the adjacent strand beds into the web and on the opposite side the inner rib of the adjacent strand beds therein. Either or both ribs may be formed with lips a<3>, a<4>, Fig. 3. By passing the wire through a die or between rolls, either during or before laying into the rope, the outer rib is lengthened, thereby giving the wire a permanent set either equal to or slightly greater than that normally produced on laying the wire into the rope.
