Abstract

Wire; drawing.- Tapered wire ropes specially adapted for use in mines are made of strands formed of unjointed wires having a varying gauge which diminishes iu steps from one end of the wire to the other, each wire extending from end to end of the rope. The wires are formed from rods which are drawn in the usual way until they have a diameter 1, Fig. 1, which is equal to the largest diameter desired. A smaller die is then drawn over the wire 2 up to the point where it is desired to cease reducing the diameter and then a still smaller die is drawn over a part 3 of the reduced wire and so on. The dies may be withdrawn over the smaller end of the wire.
