Abstract

1373814 Forming tubular strand and ropes BRIDON Ltd 19 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 11436/71 Heading D1T To form a tubular wire strand, rope or rope core, round wires or round strands of the same material are compressed by a circular annular die about a tapered mandrel, of circular cross-section, which supports the wires or strands at least until the start of plastic flow at the points of mutual contact of the wires or strands. Plastic flow of the cones or strands may also occur at the points of contact between the mandrel and the wires or strands. The mandrel may comprise, Fig. 2a, portion 11 tapering to point 14 whose diameter the desired bore diameter of the product, and a further cylindrical portion to support the wire during further compression. To produce microbore strand, the tapered mandrel shown in Fig. 2b is used, the strand being compressed by the die beyond the mandrel top 15. Adjacent wires may duct along interfaces which show as straight lines in a transverse section of the wire rope. The strands or ropes may be sheathed. Examples of single and multi-layer strands and ropes are described.
