Patented Jnnce 1133, M922 Application filed June 2, 1921. Serial No. 474,408.
To all in from i may concern lie it known that l, THOMAS (lonr. a citizen ol' the United States and a resident or the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of llew York county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certr'rin new and useful improvements in Cables, oil which the following is n specification.
This invention relates to :1 cable to be used tor drillin and also as a mooring line or hnwser and has tor its main feature and object the production o'l an increased cushioning el'lect. This is particulnrly though not exclusively oil? Value in drilling cables, such as that shown in Patent No. l,()7l,7$d 01 September 2, 1913, which shows a cracker of fibrous material surrounding twisted wire.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in concrete and preferred form in which- Figure l is side elevation of a length of cable embodying the invention: and
Figure 2 is a crosssectional View on the plane of line Q-2 of Figure l.
The cable is composed of a plurality of: ropes 2 twisted together and each rope is composed of a plurality of strands 8'. Either Langley or regular lay may be used. Each strand is composed oi a plurality of? wires twisted together and served around those twisted. wires as a group are one or more layers o'l lilyous material such as a plurality of manila yarns 5. it desired, a core 6 may be proviiled within each rope and another core '2' may be provided between the several ropes and within the cable.
In Figure 1 the wires at one end of the cable are shown naked and with the fibrous covering tapering of? in a manner similar to what is shown in atent N0. 1,071,73d in ruse is desired to use the construction as 5! cracker in a drilling cable.
I claim:
A cable comprising: a pluralityot ropes twisted together each rope consisting of? e plurality O'li strands, and. each strand con isting of a plurality of twisted wires served with a plurality cl yarns, said yarns producing a cushioning ell ect not only between the twisted strands of each rope but also between the twisted ropes of the cable.
Signed at Brooklyn, in the county of liin s and State oi of May, 1921.
