Wire ropes.-A wire rope or cable for cutting, tearing, or weakening other ropes or objects is made by incorporating with the ordinary wires c of one of the strands forming the cable additional wires a, b which are twisted together in a direction opposite to the general twist of the strand. The additional wires are made of metal hard enough to exert the required abrading action. Two additional wires are shown incorporated with one of the strands forming the cable; more than two wires, however, may be twisted together, and more than one strand may have an abrading-strand incorporated with it. The abrading-strand may project somewhat from the general run of the cable. The additional wires may be round, square, triangular, or other shape in cross-section; or they may be roughened or formed with teeth or projections.
