WIRE ROPE.
ments in Wire Ropes, of which the follow-` is a specification.
The present invention has more particularly reference to wire strands or ropes, and has for its main object the production of a non-spinning rope and the reduction of weer orgchaiing of the wires in the several layers of wires composing the strand or betweenthe strands composing the rope.
In wire ropes as at presen-t made thereV is considerable friction or chai-ing between the layers of wires when bending and passing over sheeres and drums. Furthermore in order'to prevent non-spinning of the strand or rope when it is subjected to stresses, it has been customary in the prior'art to twist or lay the several layers of the strandcr rope in opposite directions so that the spinning tendency of the two layers will neutralize each other. When this construction or' the prior art is employed the rope cannot be spliced, and also since the round wires cross each other at an angle, considerable friction lsind chaing occurs. Furthermore, in ropes of the prior art lit has not been possible to twist the strands of the rope i in the saine general direction as the direc`4 tion of? twisting of the wires to prodiice the advantageous Lang-lay rope, when it is desired to produce a non-spinning rope.
`The present invention consists in means interposed between one or more layers of wires of the strand for preventing untwist- .ing rotation or spinning of the rope on strand when subjected to stresses Prefer-` ably this is accomplished by interposing flat wires between the layers of round. wires,A
whereby the inner and outer layers of wire will be locked together, as it were, .to.p 1'e vent rotation of the rope and to diminish the chating action of the round wires.
@ther features of the invention .will ap'- pear as the specicetion proceeds.
l'n the accompanying drawing the invention is illustrated in several concrete and preferred forms, but changes ofconstrue tion may he made without departing from the invention.

What is claimed, is
1. A wire strand composed of layers twisted wires of high tensile strength, er layer of softer wires interposed between layers of high tensile strength wires. 2. A wire strand composedof a plurality of layers of wires, said loyers having diiiien ent thrusts in the same length, and a layer of softer metal wires interposed between the tirstmentiom=d` layers of wires.
3. A wire strand composed of e plnreiitL of layers of wires, said layers of wires crossstrandsbeing in the same general direction,
and a. layer of softer wire interposed between the several layers of wires in each strand for preventing untwisting rotation when the ,rbpeis subjected to stresses.
5. A wire strand composed of a plurality of layers oftwisted wires, the wires in the several layers being laid in opposite directions, and softer wiresinterposed between the several layers of wires for preventing un twisting rotation of the strand when it is subjected to stresses.
A6. A wire rope composed yof a' plurality of twisted strands, each strand having a plurality of layers of twistedwires, the wires in the several layers being laid. in opposite direotions, and a layer of 'softer wire inter-v posed between the several'lyers of wires in each strand for preventing Iuntwisting rotation when the rope is subjected to stresses'.
7. A wire rope composed of a'plurality'of twisted strands, each strand having a plurality of layers of twisted wires, the 'wires in, the several layers being laid in opposite di .rection'sthe twist of the outer layer of wires and the twist of the strands being in the saine general direction and a layer oi softer inet-al interposed between the several layers oi' wires in each strand -for preventing untwisting rotation when the rope is subjected to stresses.
8. A wire rope composed of a'plurality of wire strands, each strand consisting ot layers of twisted wires of high tensile strength, and a layer of softer wires interposed between tlio layers of high tensile strength wires.
9. A wire rope eomposedof a plurality of wire strands, each strand consisting of a plu rality of layers of wires, said layers having ditlerent thrustsl in the same length, and a layer of softer metal wires inter osed be tween the irstmentioned'layers o wires.
10. A wire ropel composed of a plurality ot' wire strands, each strand consisting of a plurality o't' layers of wires, said layers of wires crossing each other atan angle, and a layer ot' softer inetal wires interposed between the irst-lnentioned layers of wires.
