Abstract

Ironing-machines with pressing action only.- Textile materials, particularly undergarments of knitted material, are steamed and pressed by the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The material is placed on a deck 4 preferably made of wood and a cloth 16 moistened in a water trough 14 is pulled out so as to lie over the material. A heated plate 11 pivoted on arms 5, 9 at each side is moved forward and downward by its handle 12 into contact with the wet cloth 16 so that steam is generated which gives the material the required finish. The plate 11 is formed of top and bottom plates, the bottom face being heated in any way, preferably by gas through perforated pipes 13 giving Bunsen flames, but steam or electricity may be used. The plate is balanced by an adjustable counterweight 8. The water trough 14 contains a roller 15 on which is wound the cloth 16, one end of which is secured to the roller and the other end to a bar 23 by which the cloth is drawn over the deck 4 and secured by hooks 24 engaging the bar 23. A weight 21 rewinds the cloth on the roller 15 when its outer ends is released. The trough has a pair of squeezing rollers, adjustable to regulate the amount of moisture left in the cloth. The side and end frames are strengthened by diagonal bracing.
