[Classes 42 (i) and 96] A calender comprises a set of lower rollers mounted on a fixed frame, an upper frame movable upwardly relatively to the fixed frame, and having mounted therein one or more central rollers made of compressed fibrous material and adapted to rest on the lower set of rollers, and an upper set of rollers adapted to rest upon the central roller or rollers, the latter being so mounted that when the upper frame is lifted the central roller or rollers is or are disengaged from both the upper and lower sets of rollers. The lower rollers 2, 3 are mounted on a frame 1, to which a pair of arms 4, carrying the upper rollers 6, 7 is pivoted at 5. A central roller 9 normally rests upon the lower rollers, and is provided with removable stub axles 9a fitting in slots 8 in lugs depending from the arms 4. Rods 10 connect the arms 4 to a weighted lever 11, a handle 14 being provided to raise the latter, and thereby the arms 4 ; this first lifts the rollers 6, 7, clear of the roller 9, and then lifts the latter from the rollers 2, 3. The rollers 2, 3, 6, 7, are chain-driven from an electric motor which drives intermediate sprockets co-axial with the shaft 5 ; similarly, steam is supplied to them through pipes 35, 36, which branch off from the pipe 33 through joints in a box coaxial with the shaft 5. One of the upper set of rollers may be made of fibrous material. Two superposed central rollers may be used, one in contact with the upper, and the other with the lower set.
