Abstract

Closure members, simple lift; seats, valve members; leakage, preventing.-A screw-down valve is provided with a closure washer of rubber or similar soft material upon the edge of which an inwardly turned lip is formed when contact is made with a metal cone on closing the valve. The rubber washer may form the seat or be attached to the valve spindle. A metal washer is also fitted to limit the pressure on the soft washer, and a diaphragm substituted for a stuffing-box for preventing leakage past the valve spindle. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the valve seat is provided with the rubber washer a' which is held in place by a screwed metal washer a<3> having a slightly larger bore and also a coned surface of the same angle as the cone plug D. When the plug is screwed down, an inwardly turned lip is formed on the rubber washer. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the seating a<5> is coned, and the washers are screwed into the open head a<6> on the valve spindle d<1>; the inwardlyturned lip is shown in this Figure. The packing diaphragm b<1> has a central aperture which is a tight fit upon the valve spindle so as to move with it; a thin metal or other washer b<2> is disposed above to give it support and protection.
