Abstract

A shaker table 38 for vibrating test items 42 is vibrated in all directions by a plurality of vibrators 34 which are controlled a) in a preprogrammed manner to automatically vary their output to enhance the randomness of the vibrations to ensure that the table does not get locked on to a particular frequency and b) in response to feedback from the table to ensure that the test items are vibrated in a controlled manner. In the case of pneumatic vibrators, the randomness enhancing is achieved by means of a variable area orifice 58 in the air line between the supply 74 and the vibrators. A change in the orifice area is made automatically e.g. every 2-3 secs by a microprocessor controlled flow control mechanism 60. The feedback control is achieved by periodically sensing the input to the test items 42 by accelerometers 44, computing RMS response, comparing with a desired value and using the resulting error signal to control an air pressure regulator 66 in the air line to the vibrators. Thus the vibrations are limited to a preselected value. The spring stiffness and damping of the coupling 40 transmitting the vibrations to the table 38 may also be controlled. The vibrators are preferably of the impacting free piston type. <IMAGE>
