201,473. Short, A. E., Short, H. O., and Webber, F. Nov. 4, 1922. Screw propellers.-In variable pitch propellers for aircraft wherein the adjustment of the blades is effected by an annular sliding member the sliding member is actuated by gearing driven by a flexible shaft from a shaft rotated by the aviator. The blades 2 have bearing sleeves 3 on the shanks 1 which fit on radial arms 4 on the boss 5. A cap 8 and collar 7 are suitably screwed into position to hold the ball bearing 9. The caps 8 have lugs from which pass coupling arms 12 to lugs 11 on an annular sleeve 10. The sleeve can be slidden endwise, to effect alteration of the pitch of the blades, by the flange 16 on a boss 15 which is externally screwed and internally keyed at 18 to a fixed sleeve 13. Freely mounted on this sleeve is another sleeve 19 which is internally threaded to engage the threads on the boss 15 and also has an external pinion 20. Rotation of this sleeve 19 effects a sliding movement of the boss 15 and the sleeve 10. For rotating the pinion 20, a small pinion 21, worm and worm wheel 23, 22, flexible shaft 24, pinions 25 and hand crank 26 are employed.
