Abstract

128,491. Kelly, E. M. Nov. 1, 1918. Steering-gear.-A steering-gear of the kind in which a screw-actuated member engages a slot in the tiller arm has the screw-actuated member provided with rollers, preferably conical ones, engaging inclined strips secured in the slot. The actuating shaft 14 works in bearings 15 in a framing 16 and at one end has thrust washers 18 held in position by collars 21 and spring washers 20, secured by lock-nuts 22, 23. One end of the shaft carries a dog clutch whereby it may be connected through spur, bevel, or worm gearing to hand steering-wheels and has similar means at the other end for connecting to a steering-engine or electric motor. A nut 11 engaging the shaft is secured by a screwed ring 12 and set-screw in a member 7 adapted to slide on a guide-rod attached to the main framing. The member 7 has pintles 6 on which conical rollers 3 are adjustably secured by nuts 9 bearing against washers 8, which rollers are adapted to bear against tapered plates 4 secured to a slot in the tiller-arm 2.
