Abstract
361,117. Screwing ; tapping. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE D'APPAREILLAGES M•CANIQUES ET ELECTRIQUES, 74, Rue St-Maur, Paris. Nov. 21, 1930, No. 35130. Convention date, March 6. [Class 83 (iii).] In a portable machine for screwing or tapping, the tool-spindle is driven through a reversing bevelgear drive, controlled by axial pressure on the tool, and a yielding ball clutch from a worm wheel rotated by a flexible shaft. The hollow casing 1 is closed by end caps 2, 3, the former having a handle 17 adjustable on a screwed part 2a thereof and locked by a split 17a and a clamping screw 19. The flexible shaft is attached to a spindle 7 carrying a worm driving the wheel 5 loose on a shaft 4. A disc 8 secured to the worm wheel 5 has recesses 8a engaged by balls 10 located in cylindrical holes 9a in a collar 9 cottered to the shaft 4 at 11. A spring 13 normally maintains the balls 10 in contact with the disc 8 through a washer 12 but allows the drive to slip on overload, the compression of the spring 13 being varied by adjusting the handle 17 and causing a ball 16 therein to move the abutment sleeve 14 of the spring. A bevel gear 21 on the shaft 4 rotates a gear 23 loose on the tool-spindle 24 through idle gears 22 and a collar 25 secured to the spindle 24 is adapted to drive the tool in one direction or the other through dogs 29, 30 thereon engaging similar recesses in the bevel gears 21, 23 respectively. Spring pressed balls 27 normally maintain the collar 25 in the neutral position shown, but axial pressure on the handle 17 causes the tap to be rotated in the appropriate direction by tapping or withdrawal. The spindles and shafts in the machine are mounted in lubricated ball bearings.
