Abstract
200,992. Coward, E. S. June 8, 1922. Brakes, arrangement and disposition of.-The band brake of a motor vehicle serves to retain the wheel in position in event of fracture of the axle by engagement of the brake band or a part attached thereto with a flange on the brake drum or other part rigidly secured to the wheel. The brake band h is pivoted to the arm k of a U-bolt fixed to the flange b of the axle casing a by a boss o attached to the band and having lateral play on the arm k. A spring r normally holds the band clear of the drum at this part. An operating lever x is pivoted at v to one end of the band and is connected to the other end by a bolt 11 having an adjusting nut 12 engaging a lug t. The bolt 11 passes through a lug 16 fixed to the torque rod c and projecting in front of a flange g on the brake drum e which is fixed to the wheel hub. Angle plates 20 fixed to the band project between the drum and the wheel. In the event of breakage of the axle outward movement of the wheel and axle shaft relatively to the axle casing a is prevented by the engagement of the flange g on the drum with the lug 16 and the brake band and of the brake drum with the plates 20. The brake is shown as applied to the " Ford " car the bolt k being fixed in the pivot hole of the brake blocks which are dispensed with.
