Brakes, arrangement and disposition of; controlling-apparatus, arrangements of transmission gear in conjunction with.-Relates to the mounting and control of brakes for vehicles in which the vehicle axle is permitted a swinging movement to damp shocks by mounting it in an eccentrio about which the wheel is free to turn. As shown, the wheel hub a is mounted by a ball bearing c on the eccentric d which carries the axle f on a ball bearing e. The hub a is enlarged to form the brake drum b, and the brake blocks k are pivoted at j to a carrier i in which is also mounted at l the actuating-eccentric for the blocks. The carrier i is loosely mounted upon an extension of the eccentric d and has an arm q which is connected by a link s to the vehicleframe at r. This connection prevents rotation of the carrier while permitting the necessary horizontal and vertical movement with respect to the frame. The inner end of the shaft l to which the brake eccentric is fixed. is mounted free to move in all directions in a bearing disposed as near the centre of the vehicle as possible and the arm m for connection with the actuating lever o is fixed to the shaft l near this point so that the oscillation of the arm due to the swinging of the axle is insufficient to affect the brake.
