Abstract

775,778. Steering vehicles. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO., Ltd., and ARMSTRONG, W. Aug. 22, 1955 [Aug. 28, 1954], No. 25043/54. Class 79(5). A steering linkage incorporates a lever type hydraulic damping unit whose spindle extends below the frame of the vehicle to serve as a bearing for a lever forming part of the linkage. In Fig. 1, a steering arm 5, pivoted to the steering box 6, is connected by a track rod 7 to the lever arm 8 of the damping unit 9 which lever arm acts as the idler arm of the linkage. The damping unit 9 is bolted to a frame member 10 and its spindle 15 is arranged vertically to carry the lever arm 8 at its lower end. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the spindle 15 carries a lever arm 17, 18 at each end so that the steering torque is transmitted from one lever arm to the other through the damping unit.
