Locking vehicle wheels by positive detents.- In apparatus for preventing reverse movement of vehicles of the type having a ratchet and pawl arrangement under the control of the driver, the ratchet is fitted to the brake drum and the pawl is pivoted to a bracket mounted on the tubular axle casing. As applied to a motor vehicle of the Ford type ratchet teeth b<2> are formed on the brake drum C bolted to the wheel A or are formed on half-rings bolted to the drum. A pawl E for engagement with the ratchet teeth b' is secured to a spindle mounted in a bracket F bolted as at f<1> or formed integral with the cover plate C<1> of the brake drum, this plate having a boss c<1> bv which it is fixed on the tubular axle casing J enclosing the driving shaft axle. The bolts f<1> serve also for securing the torque bar D to the cover plate C<1>. The pawl E is urged into en. gagement with the teeth b<2> by a spring H and can be disengaged by a Bowden wire k<2> connected to an arm G on the spindle of the pawl. The casing K of the Bowden wire is adjustably attached to a bracket M fixed to the bracket F. A similar device but having oppositely disposed ratchet teeth may be fitted to the other driving wheel of the vehicle to prevent forward movement on an incline. The operating means for the pawls may in this case be arranged to prevent simultaneous engagement. A duplicated device may also be fitted to vehicles, such as tram-cars, adapted to travel with either end forwards. The ratchet teeth and the pawl may be so arranged as to prevent movement in either direction.
