Abstract
137,545. Pfleeger, W. Jan. 10, 1919, [Convention date]. Brakes, arrangement and disposition of.-Means for locking wheels and shafts, specially adapted for preventing movement of motor-vehicles downhill, comprise a pawl 26 having two teeth 25, one or other of which can be engaged with a ratchet 13 on a shaft or axle of the vehicle according as the vehicle is headed up or down the hill. The pawl is pivoted at 26<1> and is held in the disengaged position by a spring 27. The teeth 25 are so shaped at 30 that movement of the ratchet in one direction effects disengagement of the pawl. The ratchet may be mounted on the rear wheel axle, as in Fig. 2, and the pawl be connected by the rod shown to a hand-lever; or the ratchet may be mounted on the propeller shaft 38, Fig. 9, in a casing 33 provided with a bracket 34 secured by bolts 36 to a cross member 35 of the chassis, springs 37 being interposed to absorb shocks, and take up the vibrations of the shaft. The pawl in this arrangement has connexions 40, 41 to an operating arm 43 provided with locking mechanism 44. The ratchet comprises a pair of notched half-ring members 12 each having a V-shaped flange 16 which is engaged between the bevelled edges of semicircular body members 13, 14 by transverse bolts 21, springs 23 being interposed between the bolt heads and the members. The half-ring and body members have flanges 17, 31 for bolting the two halves together, and a set-screw 20 secures the whole to the shaft. This construction of the ratchet permits adjustment to compensate for wear.
