Abstract

Hoods, opening tops, and weather screens.-In a convertible open-toclosed motor car, bus, boat, aeroplane, &c., a framework can be raised from or lowered into recesses in the sides and one or both ends and carries longitudinal side rails A, Fig. 1, supporting and guiding the edges of a flexible cover which is drawn over the framework from a roller 0 at one end. The framework may comprise an end cowl N and standards B, which support the rails A, and is raised and lowered by flexible cables &c. D secured to the bottoms or sides of the standards B and passing over pulleys C on the body to drums G on a shaft F rotated manually or by the engine shaft. The rails A are hinged to correspond with the door hinges. The flexible cover is moved along the rails A by sprockets M, Fig. 3, operated preferably from the shaft F and engaging hollow pins Q on the cover, and guide pieces P on the cover prevent it from buckling. In a vehicle of varying width, the cover comprises a central portion L<2>, Fig. 8, and two side portions L<1> connected by telescopic stiffening- rods L<4>, L<5> so that the cover adjusts itself to the required width. The roller 0 is spring loaded to assist winding up of the cover.
