Vibration-dampers.-A shock absorber for the springs of motor cars &c. and of the kind in which the movement of a member is free in one direction and frictionally retarded in the other, comprises a bar fixed to, or operated by, a suspension spring and sliding in a casing between an eccentric quadrant and an abutment, or between two eccentric quadrants. As shown, a metal bar 14 is bolted to lugs 16 on the spring and passes through slots 17, 18 in a casing 1 secured to the chassis and between leather or like coverings 3 on a fixed abutment 2 and on a quadrant 4 pivoted eccentrically at 5 a spring 7 secured to the quadrant and to an adjustable rod 10 holding the quadrant against the bar. When the bar 14 is raised on deflection of the vehicle spring, it passes freely between the quadrant and abutment, but its return movement tends to move the quadrant closer to the abutment and is therefore retarded. Instead of the abutment, a second eccentric quadrant may be provided, the two quadrants being drawn together by springs. The bar may be arranged horizontally and operated from the spring through levers or by a cable passing over pulleys.
