Abstract

174,630. Johnstone, F. W. Jan. 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Safety appliances.-A curved or bent metal leaf spring 4 secured by a clamp &c. 6 to the front end of the chassis 8 of a motor vehicle and connected at 5 to the shackle 3, which connects the front end of a semi-elliptic bearing spring 1 to the chassis, serves as a bumper if the vehicle meets an obstruction, and also as a shock-absorber for the spring 1. Resilient means may be provided to prevent contact of the spring 4 with the chassis 8 or shackle 3, and for this purpose the spring 4 may be formed with a continuation 10, as shown in Fig. 3, or a block 11 of rubber &c. may be secured to the spring 4, as shown in Fig. 4.
