Abstract
A planetary speed reducer has concentric input and output shafts (1 and 2), each carrying a sun cogwheel (3,10). A third coaxial sun cogwheel (9), is fixed to a stationary frame (15). Each sun cogwheel (3,9,10) is connected to a planet cogwheel (5,7,8) by a cog belt (4a,4b,4c) to form a planetary set. The three planet cogwheels are fast on a common shaft (6) which rotates about its own axis and orbits about the axis of the output and input shafts. As the planets turn, they are drawn about their respective suns and the teeth on the planet cogwheels describe an epicyclic path. The speed reduction ratio may be very high dependent mainly on the difference in the relative sizes and number of teeth of the output sun wheel (10) and the fixed sun wheel (9). Chains and sprocket wheels can be used in place of cog belts and cogwheels. <IMAGE>
