Abstract

An electrophotographic copier is described in which dry toner (T) is fed to the outer surface (5) of a photoconductive drum to develop an electrostatic image. The dry toner (T) is stored in a hopper (9) and the toner (T) is extracted from the bottom of the hopper by a roller (7) or belt which brings the toner (T) past doctor (9a) into contact with the image and develops it. An electrode (10) is immersed in the toner in the hopper and is energised to impart an electrostatic charge of one polarity or the other to the toner. This enables positive and negative image development to be achieved far more readily than in previously proposed copiers in which the toner was triboelectrically charged. In an alternative arrangement [fig. 7 (not shown)] the roller is disposed above the hopper and the electrode, in the form of a roller, contacts the developer on the surface thereof. <IMAGE>
