Abstract

200,252. Stokes, H. P., and Eunson, J. W. April 25, 1922. Railway and tramway rails, trueing and surfacing in situ.-Comprises a truck B, fitted with transversely balancing means, and carrying on a vertically-adjustable transverse shaft 3 two independent grinding-attachments which may be adjusted laterally on the shaft to enable the machine to operate on rails of various gauges. The shaft 3 is carried by three cantilevers 4 movable vertically in unison on the truck by hand-operated worm-gearing 13 - - 16. The grinding-attachments each comprise a frame 1 having bows 2 fitting loosely on the shaft 3 and held in adjusted lateral position thereon by split collars which are secured to the shaft. In the frames are journaled spindles 9 carrying grinding-wheels 8, the spindles carrying pulleys 10 which are adjustable in position along the shafts to keep them in line with driving pulleys 11 on the truck; the frames also carry vertically adjustable pivotal shoes 7, which rest on the rails during grinding. The machine may be traversed quickly along the rails, or may be moved slowly to and fro for grinding, by a motor A and intermediate gearing mounted on the truck. The flanged wheels of the truck are movable on their axles to allow for changes of gauge of the rails. Specification 198,871, [Class 83 (iii), Metals, Cutting], is referred to.
