Abstract

379,393. Grinding railway &c. rails. HOPLEY, C. P., 14, Juror Street, Montreal, Canada. June 1, 1931, No. 15982. (Class 60.] A machine for grinding rails consists of a lower frame which is clamped upon the rails and has pivotally mounted thereon an upper frame upon which is reciprocable a bracket carrying a grinding-wheel. The machine comprises frame members 11 connected by rods 12, the members 11 carrying, in members 17, 18, wheels 19 having flanges 20 to engage the rail 21 being ground, and clamping flanges 21a adjustable by nuts 23 ; jack screws 25 serve to hold the machine upright. Pivoted to the members 11 at 37 are upper frame members 31, 32 connected by rods 33 .. 36, the upper frame being movable about the pivots by gearing 43, 44, operated by a handle 48, and locked in position by nuts 41. On the rods 35, 36 is slidable a carriage 49, movable by a screwed shaft 51 and driven, by a reversing- mechanism comprising bevel-gearing and a slidable clutch 64, from an electric motor 54, the clutch being moved by a member 69, on a rod 70 carrying dogs 73, 74 engaged by an arm 71 on the carriage 49 ; the shaft 51 also may be rotated by a hand-wheel 52. Vertically adjustable on the carriage, by a screw and hand-wheel 81, is a bracket 75 supporting a horizontally slidable plate 83 movable by a screw 91 and a hand-wheel 92 and carrying an electric motor 85, which drives a grinding- wheel 87. In operation, the machine is clamped to the rail and the grinding-wheel is reciprocated along the tread ; it also may be moved in an arcuate path across the rail, to grind a transverse curvature thereon by swinging the upper frame about the pivots 37. The machine may be lifted by handles 93, 94, and in order to assist in supporting the machine in an upright position, an auxiliary wheel is provided to rest upon the other rail, that wheel being carried by a rod pivotally connected to the member 31 ; the shaft 51 may be enclosed in a tubular sleeve 97.
