Abstract

406,610. Grinding track rails. FOX, C. A., Oakmont, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Oct. 2, 1933, No. 27007. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1932. [Class 60.] Railway and like rails 5 are ground by means of a peripherally acting grinding- wheel 6, the axis of which is disposed obliquely to a line transverse of the rail, and for treating convex rails, the wheel has a concave longitudinal curvature corresponding to the convex surface of the rail, the obliquity of the wheel being taken into consideration. The wheel 6 is carried by a truck 1 mounted on a stationary axle 3 and a rotating axle 2, track wheels 4 being carried by the axles. The wheel and an electric driving motor 7 therefor are mounted in a frame 9 pivotally carried by trunnions 10 adjustably mounted on a plate 11, and between the side members 12 of the frame is pivotally adjustable, by nuts 32 and slots 31, a guide frame 17 in which is adjustable, by means of a screw 27, a yoke 16, clamped in adjusted position by bolts 22 and nuts 24. In vertical arms 15 of the yoke the shaft 13 of the grinding-wheel is mounted, the wheel being driven by a belt 8 from the motor 7 ; the truck is moved along the rails by a hand-wheel 46 driving the axle 2 through a chain 48. In order to lift and lower the grinding-wheel gradually when treating low parts of the rail, the frame 9 is tilted about its trunnions by means of an inclined member 41 engaging rollers 42 on the frame 9 and carried by a bar 33 pivoted at 34 to the axle 3 and having a pin 35 engaging a cam groove 36 in a cam 37 which may be clamped to the axle 2, to rotate therewith, by a bolt 39.
