262,187. Brooks, T., and Woods-Gilbert Rail Remodelling Co., Ltd. Sept. 5, 1925. Milling-machines. -- A machine for treating rails consists of a chassis, comprising a frame 1 and aT-shaped portion 2 bolted thereto, supported on front track wheels 3 and on rear wheels 5 carried by an axle 4, the machine being tiltable about the axle 4 to regulate the cut of the milling-tools 13, which are carried by heads 14 located in gaps 25 in the frame. The vehicle and the tools are driven by an electric or other motor 6, the drive for the axle 4 being, for free travelling speed, through chain or belt drives 10, 12, and for slow-working speed, through a shaft 17, variable speed friction drive 19, 20, and a reduction gear box 16, clutches being provided to enable the changes of gearing to be made. The tools are driven by a belt &c. 15 through gearing carried by the heads 14, and the heads are adjustable transversely on slides 27 to suit the gauge of the track. The front wheels 3 are carried on the part 2 of the frame 1 and are mounted on stub axles 33 carried by vertically adjustable blocks 30, moved by screws, which may be operated by worm-gear and a hand wheel 31, or by power, to tilt the machine about the rear axle 4. The wheels 3 are adjustable on the axles 33, to suit the gauge of the track, by means of packing &c. In order to side-track the machine, wheels 34 are provided which may be raised or lowered by hand through gearing in boxes 35 or by means of a shaft 37 and associated gearing driven by the motor 6; the wheels also are driven, through gearing, by the shaft 37. In place of the front wheels 3, a frame 48, Fig. 3, pivoted at 50 to an adjustable quadrant lever 51, 52 may be provided, the frame carrying track runners, 49, and the lever 51 being adjustable about the stub axle 33.
