Abstract

354,558. Road rollers. FEDI, J., 55, Rue de Lyon, Paris. Aug. 16, 1930, No. 24588. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1929. [Class 6 (i).] A rolling machine for finishing concrete roadway coverings comprises a main frame 5, an engine 6, and longitudinal rollers 1, 2 of relatively small diameter and of a length slightly greater than the length, measured along the road, of the transverse stretch or band of road-covering material placed in position at one time, the rollers supporting the weight of the machine when in use and being reversibly rotatable by the engine so that the machine may be driven across the road from one side to the other. The rollers 1, 2 may be driven through chain gearing 11, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The roller 2 may be mounted in spherical bearings, the front journal box 31, Fig. 3, being slidable transversely of the machine for adjusting the roller at an inclination for finishing curved sections of the road. It is moved by means of a link 33 and a pivoted lever 34 provided with a fork 36 carrying a nut 37 on a screw-threaded shaft 38 rotated by means of a hand-wheel 40, shaft 41, and bevel gearing 42, 43. The engine 6 may also drive a transverse roller 13 mounted on a pivoted frame which is adjustable vertically to raise the roller from the ground. A second transverse roller 14 may be provided with steering mechanism. The transverse rollers may be raised by means of a jack or by racks 30 actuated by pinions driven from the engine. Normally these rollers are raised from the ground, but they are lowered for moving the machine from one band of covering material to the next, along metal plates placed on the road, or along tracks at the side of the road. For transportation purposes road wheels may be mounted on axles fixed on the machine or temporarily attached to it. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the longitudinal rollers may be raised vertically and that the machine may be drawn by animals or a motor vehicle, and also refers to various methods of making and treating roadway coverings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
