[Class 6 (i)] To enable the side rolls 3 of a roller to adjust themselves to the camber of the road, they are pivoted to the roller frame at a point 4 below the axle 6 and within the breadth of the roll. The frame comprises longitudinal members 1 connected by transverse bars 2. Each roll is journalled in a casing 5 which carries at its lower end a plate 9, to the ends of which are welded depending webs, one of which 10 is shown in Fig. 1. The bars 2 are pivoted to bolts passing through the webs 10. A toothed wheel 13 is keyed to the axle 6 and is rotated by a pinion 14 formed on a hollow shaft 15, as shown in Fig. 3. The shaft 15 is grooved internally and a grooved shaft 19 engages slidably therein and is rotated from the engine to which it is connected through a universal joint 20. When the camber of the road alters, the rolls pivot about the point 4, the shaft 19 simultaneously sliding in the shaft 15, the joint 20 allowing for the necessary tilting of the shaft 19. Fig. 1 shows a clamping device for maintaining the rolls in any position. A rod 23 is pivoted at 22 to the casing 5 and slides in a sleeve 28 fixed to an abutment or part of the frame 26. A wheel 24 screwed on the rod 23 fan be moved to abut against the sleeve 28 and so fix the rod 23 and casing 5 against movement to the right. A similar arrangement is provided on the other side of the abutment 26, a wheel 25 preventing movement to the left. The wheels 24, 25 may be adjusted to permit a limited tilting movement of the rolls. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which pivoted links 29, 30 are provided at the upper and lower ends of the casing 5 to allow the rolls to move vertically without altering their inclination. A spring 32 connects the casing 5 with the frame of the roller.
