Abstract

529,739. Vehicle spring suspensions. SALMON, N. June 2, 1939, No. 16307. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle spring suspension for wheeled or endless track vehicles, each wheel or track roller is carried by a pivoted arm fixed to a torsion bar, the individual torsion bars being interconnected by gearing or levers to a common torsion bar, the arrangement being such that the wheels or rollers will adjust themselves individually to the surface over which the vehicle is travelling. In the construction shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 each road wheel is carried by an arm 1 fixed to a transverse, torsion bar spring 2, the inner ends of these bars being connected to arms 3 on the ends of a longitudinal torsion bar 4, the result being that when any one wheel rises the diagonally-opposite wheel also tends to rise, and the other diagonal pair tend to fall. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 applied to an endless track vehicle the vehicle is carried by load rollers 6, 6a running on the tracks (not shown). These rollers are mounted in pairs on rocking beams 7, 7a carried by arms 1 fixed to transverse torsion bars enclosed in casings 8, 8a, the inner ends of the torsion bars being connected by gearing, enclosed in casings 10, 10a to a longitudinal torsion bar enclosed in a casing 9. The vehicle body is fixed at 12a to the casings 8, 8a. In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the road wheels are mounted on upper and lower parallel links 13, one of the links for each wheel being fixed to a longitudinal torsion bar 14 or 15, the inner ends of these torsion bars being connected by gearing 18 to a transverse torsion bar 16. The front torsion bars 14 may be connected as shown to the upper links 13 of the front wheels, and the rear torsion bars 15 to the lower links 13 of the rear wheels. Means may be provided for varying the rate of springing of the torsion bars. As shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the torsion bar 23 is square and carries at spaced points along its length projections 25, 25a provided with shoulders 26, 26a adapted, after a predetermined rotation of the torsion bar, to come into contact with fixed stops 27, 27a on a fixed sleeve or housing 24. The projections and stops are so arranged that they come into action successively; thus as shown the shoulders 26a abut the stops 27a but the shoulders 26 are not yet in contact with the stops 27.
