Abstract

1,016,596. Reducing roll resistance; independent suspensions. VOLKSWAGENWERK A.G. Sept. 19, 1962, No. 35663/62. Heading B7D. A vehicle suspension has torsion bar main springs and a compensating linkage to reduce roll resistance incorporating one or more torsion bars 24 with cranked ends 26, 27 coupled by links 28, 29 to the wheels. The wheels may be mounted on swing axles or longitudinal links 18, 19 or on a beam axle. In Fig. 7 the two torsion bars 34, 35 are connected by a rotation reversing linkage 36, 37, 38 and are arranged at an acute angle to a transverse vehicle axis. Two parallel torsion bars may be used (Fig. 8, not shown) with cranked ends connected to swing axles 12, 13. In an alternative (Fig. 4, not shown) the longitudinal arms 72 and their suspension springs and the compensating spring 70 are mounted on an auxiliary frame 76 resiliently connected to the vehicle body 78. The torsion elements may comprise rubber sleeves (Fig. 9, not shown) or discs in combination with a torsion bar.
