Abstract

676.774. Guiding motor vehicles. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J. Feb. 13, 1950 [Feb. 15, 1949], No. 4085/49. Classes 79(i) and 79(v) In a wheeled vehicle for use on a trackway of the kind comprising a track of width corresponding substantially to the gauge of the vehicle wheels and a central guide rail projecting above the track, which rail is engaged by guide means on the vehicle, the guide means comprise a pair of laterally spaced rollers rotatably mounted on vertical stub axles which have threaded engagement with the vehicle frame so that the height of the guide rollers can be adjusted to compensate for wheel and track wear. As shown, the invention is applied to a locomotive 11 having tyred wheels 12 adapted to run on the concrete or other rigid track 10 and the guide rollers 16. The rollers 16 are arranged in two pairs at each end of the locomotive and are adapted to engage the central rail 13 which is supported as at 14 to prevent snow &c. drifts. Each roller 16 comprises a hollow cylindrical body 17 rotatably mounted by bearings 18, 19 on a pin 20, the bearings being held between a shoulder 23 and a nut 22. The pin 20 is eccentrically mounted on the threaded stub axle 21, the threaded portion engaging a bush 27. At the top of the axle 21 is a kerf 39 by means of which the axle can be rotated to raise the roller 16 to compensate for wear on the track 10 and wheel tyres and by virtue of the eccentric pin 20 the roller can be adjusted laterally on rotation of the axle to compensate for wear on the rail 13 and roller. A plate 28 carries two bushes 27. A pair of plates 28 are interconnected by bracing members 37 and each plate 28 is secured in its middle portion to the lower part 29 of a cranked axle 30 carrying the wheels 12. Vertical portions 31 of the axle 30 are guided between plates 32 carried by the vehicle frame 33. The axle 30 is connected with the frame by leaf springs 34, the ends of which are connected to lugs 35 on the vehicle frame. Specifications 642,699 and 676,775 are referred to.
