APPARATUS FOR USE INTHE REPAIR OF ROADS AND LIKE,
inseam.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MnLn L, of London, England, gentleman, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for use in the Repair of- Roads and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to a vehicular apparatus for use in the repair of roads and the like and the object is to provide a simple and efficient apparatus for the purpose stated which will have the property of. great mobility and will render the hitherto laborious operations of repair much more rapid and easy than hithertoi The invention consists in the novel features, combinations and arrangements of parts, all as hereinafter fully described and specificallypointed out in appended claims with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a plan view of one embodiment of the invention given as an example.
The apparatus shown comprises a strong vehicular frame a mounted on running wheels (6 say four in number, any or all of which may be driven for, propulsion of the vehicle as by means of an internal combustion engine located within the bonnet a or other source of power carried by the frame,
say at the'front thereof, with the usual or any approved system of transmission between the engine and wheels and. with any desired form of steering a and control mechanism.
,Mounted in the frame a suitably between the front and rear wheels is a heavy roller Z) for rolling the surface of the road after repairing or patching materials have been laid, this, roller being, for example, hollowed to a considerable extent and adapted for the v ready removal and insertion of weights which may be in the form of detachable segments so that the effective weight of the roller may be varied according 'to the requirements of the work to be performed or other existing conditions, or the roller may be capable of holding water as ballast. This roller is so mounted in the frame that it can be raised and lowered at will, that is to say, when out of active use the roller willbe raised and permit the vehicle to travel under the action of the propelling means at any speed within the capacity of the motive power, and when in use to be lowered on to the road surface for rolling same. The rais- Application filed October 5, 1920. Serial No. 414,797.
extending from the frame' a.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnimd Aug 1, 1g22 ing and'lowering mechanism may be actnable from the engine or propelling means, but the means shown is manual and consists in providing the roller with bearings Z7 one at each side, and each slidable in a slot 6 in a bar 21 which'is under the aotionof an eccentric Z2 on a shaft 22 provided with a worm wheel 6 with which engages a worm Z) on a vertical shaft 5 which latter is rotated through wormgear b from a hand crank 6 supported by a pillar?) carried on an upper platform It hereinafter referred to. Very considerable reduction'of gearing is thus obtainedwhich will permit the roller sary clutch devices, or through pairs of.
bevel-gears with means for, shifting same for forward or reverse drive so that the roller may beraised or lowered according to requirements. The control by the engine could also be'adapted to operate the eccen tric mechanism describedfor manual opera-- tion. The roller may be divided into a number of sections or separate elements 79 as shown in-Fig. 2.
I also provide in addition to the main roller 6 other lateral rollers 0, c for instance', one at each side of the apparatus, for
dealing with repairing or finishing material which has been laid adjacent the edges, gutters or herbs of the roadway and which cannot be reached by said main roller 6. These v lateral rollers are shown as mounted in forks c capable of being raised and lowered as by means of worm gearv c on transverse shaft 0 driven by a vertical shaft 0 rotated by hand wheel 0 carried by the platform 71, above'referred to. d Other forms of transmission may be! used, for instance, similar to that for the main roller 6 and where necessary, provision is also made foranchoring said rollers in their raised position, as
by means of a chain or wirerope d passed over or connected to suitable members al In addition to the roller or rollersabove described I contemplate providing the 'appa ratus with one or more suitably disposed tampers or rammers c by which the repairing material may be stamped or rammed into place, such'devioes being of particular value in repairing what are'known as pot-holes,
ably mounting the tamper supp'ort c on'rods and prov ding separate means; for adjust ng These tamp'ers -may with advantage be placed near the rear of the "vehiclenunder ready control of the operator and be operated by li-ft camsor tappets arranged to raise them'to a desired height and then sud denly release them so that they perform theirv function by gravity, or in lieu of this, some means of positively actuating the tampersv may be provi-ded,-such as by an eccentric motion. 7 In the drawings a single tamper 1s shown, capable of being traversed both longitudi- 'nally andtransversely 'of the apparatus withinlimits determined by the frame structu're thereof so that a considerable range ofmovement" may be providedjfor. This traversing movement may be effected by slidit'ther'eonin both directions, these adjusting means'being shown as comprlsmg screwed rods'c for longitudinal adjustment operated by bevel-Wheels 6 from cross shaft 6, which port carries "a transverse shaft-f, driven: through bevel-gears f from vertical shaft f in turn is rotated by be'vel whee ls 'e from verticalshaft '6- and hand-wheel e the latter mounted onl 'the platformfi.
For transverse ad ustment the tamper sup- Which' int'urn is actuated through other bevel-gearsf carried by a bracket j" slid able on a keyed shaft f driven by chain gear I cams are mounted on'a'shaft g to which rof from a'hand-wheel 7 carried by the plat} form h. The construction is such that the means do not'interfere with the means" used'for raising and lowering the tamper; These'latter means are shown as including snail cams 9 adapted to engage underprojectionsg ,'on the tamper stem 9? and permit the tamper to drop by gravity whenthe summitsof the cams are passed. The
tation is imparted"thro'ugh chain gear if and bevel 'geal 'ing g from shaft g driven from" the engine 'or other source of power. The shaft is keyed so that the bevels may slide thereon to permit'of adjustment of the tamper'. Cams of different sizes may be used her, or prongsor points can-be attach ed to to provide a varyingdropfor the tamper and the tamper can be weighted if desired. The tamper maybe replaced by a scarifying device, if desired, operated in a similar manthe base ofthe'tamper. I p 1 "A still further feature of the invention consists in'thep-rovision of a raised platform 72, preferably'at thefront of the' vehicle from which the operator cancontrol the engine andsteering handle w nd on which as aforesaid are also mounted controlling or actuating devices b ye 0 and 7 for the rollers and tamper, and alsofor other elements to be describedlater; The platform and the said devicesare so located and arranged that the operator has a clear view of the operation of all said elements and can thus properly ,manipulate same.
Beneath said platform receptacles may be provided one- 7L fo'rf example. for water 1 for distrlbution by pipe 76 to the'road surface adjacent the roller 6, and the other it, for road repairing or finishing materials with means such'aspipe h forconveying said receptacles being preferably under the control of the operator from the raised plat form h aforesaid by any convenient means as willbe readily understood. One or more tanks j can also belocated above the-plat form in suchposition as "not to obscure the" view of the tampingand above referred to. v j p What I claim as my'invention and desire general control to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States is v 1 1. An apparatus for use-in road repairs comprising in combination a vehicular frame carrying a main heavy roller, means for raising and loweringsaid roller from and tothe v weight of the vehicle may be'thrownl' onto the roller when. in action whilst" retaining pressure on the running wheels of the vehici ularjfranie sufficient for their proper function.
