Abstract

198,483. Grimmett, A. J. March 21, 1922. Revolution-direction indicators.-In apparatus for indicating the direction of rotation of ships' propellers, contacts are controlled by two gear wheels, one driven by the engine and the other meshing with the first and having some axial play so as to he moved to close different contacts according to the direction of rotation. As shown in Fig. 1, a spiral or helical wheel A is driven by the engine through a clutch, flexible shaft, &c. and gears with a similar wheel B having axial play. When the engine is working, contact spring G or H is forced into contact with member D or E according to the direction of revolution so as to light lamp I or J. To provide a means for counting the revolutions, the lamp circuit is interrupted once in a revolution of the wheel B by projections N co-operating with fixed projections O. In a modification, the direction of revolution is indicated by means of a pointer rotated by a fluid such as oil circulated in a closed cycle by a pump driven by the engine.
