Abstract

198,406. Tolmie, J. E. Aug. 26, 1922. Jet nozzles.-A nozzle for fire or other hose of the kind capable of giving either a long-range high velocity jet of liquid or a short-range flood comprises a tubular extension projecting outwards from the nozzle and a device for admitting air to the tubular extension. The nozzle is formed with a cone-shaped passage 2 converging from the inlet to the outlet end to accommodate the nozzle of a fire hose &c. and is provided with a relatively small discharge orifice 3. This nozzle is secured in or made in one with a tubular casing 4 forming an extension beyond the nozzle. The nozzle 1 is made so that its front end is at right-angles to the extension. An air valve is fixed to the casing comprising a rod 6 slidably fixed in a casing 7 and pressed upward by a spring 8 acting against a collar 9 to hold a valve closed against an opening 11. When the valve is closed the casing 4 fills with water and a low-pressure flood is formed, but when the rod 6 is depressed air is admitted by the valve 10 and forms a blanket around a high velocity jet of water and prevents it from scattering.
