Abstract

198,369. Thewes, W. O. May 26, 1922, [Convention date]. Pivoted and sliding jaw wrenches; jaw faces, handles and shanks.-In wrenches of the type in which the shank 12 of a movable jaw 5 passes through a casing 4 formed integral with a handle 2 carrying a fixed jaw 15, and wherein the jaw 5 is capable of rocking movement, the casing 4 is provided with a cam surface 17 coacting with the adjacent face of an adjusting nut 14 to provide a final grip, the nut 14 being free to move along the shank 12. The casing 4 is provided with a flared slot 7 to receive the shank 12, a flat spring 8, fixed below a protruberance 9 on an inner wall of the casing, pressing the jaw 5 to the right. The jaw 15 is fixed by a pin 16 and the surface 17 is extended laterally beyond the periphery of the nut to provide a large bearing surface and to protect the nut when the wrench is laid down. The handle 2 is tapered, both as regard thickness and breadth, to allow for lateral strains, e.g. in bending pipes, as well as the usual strains in turning nuts. The end thread 19 on the shank is bent over to prevent loss of the nut.
