Abstract
197,537. Cachemaille, A. S., (Westing- house Gear & Dynamometer Co.). May 10, 1922. Gear-wheels, grinding and trueing teeth of.- The teeth of previously cut involute gear-wheels are trued by rotating the wheel, in the presence of an abrasive, in mesh with three pinions acting independently and successively and either having different diameters, or having different numbers of teeth, whereby sliding contact is effected over substantially the whole of the tooth surface of the gear-wheel. The gear-wheel 16 is supported on rollers 14 journaled in a frame 10, and the pinion 20 is supported by rollers 17 and an adjustable roller 18 carried by a frame 11 which is adjustable towards and from the gear-wheel to bring the wheels correctly into mesh. The pinion is driven from a source of power 12 and the gearwheel is retarded by a brake 28. If three pinions of the same diameter are employed, one has the standard number of teeth, the second has one tooth more, and the third has one tooth less. The pinions are employed successively in the order : the second, the third, and the standard. When the pinions all have the same number of teeth, the diameter of one is less than, and of another greater than, that of the standard pinion.
